Fruit Beers
My favourite fruit beer is Kasteel Rouge, which is made from Kasteel Donker dark beer. This beer is aged and fermented on sour cherries for over 6 months and with 8% alcohol it is one of Belgium’s strongest fruit beers.
I visited the Van Honsebrouck brewery, where they make this amazing beer, a few years ago and sat down directly with the owner Mr. Xavier Van Honsebrouck over a few good beers. His family owns a chateau, which is also depicted on the foot of the glass from which you can taste this goodie.
Here at the Bruxx, we like to offer it in combination with venison, dishes with heavier sauces, and desserts with wild berries.
Another fruity beer I recommend is Liefmans Fruitesse on the Rocks. Served in a glass full of ice, it’s the kind of beer specialty that many of our guests appreciate in the summer. This beer is made from red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries or cherries. With its 3.8% alcohol content and its mild, refreshingly intense flavour, it is also suitable as an aperitif or as part of cocktails.
Semi-dark Beers
Kwak from the Bosteels brewery is served in a uniue hourglass-shaped glass and an avalanche effect occurs when pouring. This semi-dark beer is a beer heavyweight with its 8.4% alcohol content. Here it is best enjoyed with slow braised beef brisket à la mode with root vegetables, herbs, white wine, brown mushrooms in butter, sugar snap peas, and parsley potatoes.
Light Beers
Another one of my favourites, Hopus beer from Lefebvre Brasserie, is one of the beer heavyweights with 8.3% alcohol. We recommend it to go with the vegetarian ravioli with pecans and mascarpone and will impress you with its unique way of serving.
You’ll get a larger glass to serve the beer in at your table, and the staff will serve you the beer without one inch of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. This is poured into a small shot glass, which is placed next to it. You then regulate the bitterness of your beer yourself, based on the amount of sediment poured into the beer itself.
And my favourite light beer that you can order at the Bruxx is the Brugge Tripel from the De Gouden Boom brewery. It has a beautiful, bright golden colour and the taste has a nice bitterness with citrus notes at the end. I was taken by its freshness and definitely recommend giving it a minimum of a taste. If I had to choose a dish to go with it, it would be grilled calamari, prawns and mussels with saffron fumet and autumn vegetables.
IPA
IPA - a more hoppy type of beer with a higher alcohol content is also represented here. The full name of this type is Indian Pale Ale. In the days when India was still a British colony, more hops and alcohol were added to make the beer last during transport. From our range, I recommend Bufallo Bitter from the Van den Bossche brewery. Order them along with a meal of calamari fideua.
Lambic Beers
Here I can’t fail to mention the Boon Geuze beer with 7% alcohol content from the Boon brewery. This is a lambic beer created by spontaneous fermentation, where the name Geuze means a mixture of old and young lambics. When I first tasted this beer in Antwerp, I thought it was rotten, but today it is one of my favourite beer styles and I recommend it especially
A Beer for the Ladies.
For the ladies, I’d recommend the Mongozo Coconut beer from Huyghe Brewery with 3.6% alcohol. It’s served in a visually appealing coconut shell and tastes like a low-alcohol piña colada. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a light dessert, like our pistachio crème brûlée, or for afternoon gatherings when it’s too early for a classic cocktail.
